For the first time, the Helsinki Chamber Choir performs as a whole in one of its regular chamber concerts at St Thomas’ Church. Matthew Whittall’s powerful and meditative work for choir and percussion contrasts with Perttu Haapanen’s playful yet serious look at the various meanings of Lewis Carroll’s Alice. Percussionist Antti Suoranta completes the programme with contrasting works for solo cymbal and marimba.

CHAMBER CONCERT: DIE SCHÖNE MÜLLERIN

Thu 17 Mar 2016 7.00 pm

St Thomas’ Church, Pihlajatie 16, Helsinki

FRANZ SCHUBERT: Die schöne Müllerin

Martti Anttila, tenor

Anna Kuvaja, piano

Setting poems by Wilhelm Müller, Die schöne Müllerin is a defining song cycle of the Lied repertoire and one of Franz Schubert’s best-known works. The main character follows a stream and ends up working at a mill. There he falls deeply in love with the miller’s daughter, but she does not return his feelings. Jealousy leads him to despair, and where the stream once offered joy and advice, it now seals his fate. The expressive power of Die schöne Müllerin lies especially in its parallel depiction of two levels of time – alongside the fleeting senses and feelings of the present moment, the memory of the past is ever-present.

At our April chamber concert, soprano Varvara Merras-Häyrynen and pianist Joel Papinoja open up the rich emotional world of songs by Toivo Kuula, Jean Sibelius, Kaija Saariaho and Erich W. Korngold. The concert includes Kuula’s rarely-heard large-scale work Merenkylpijäneidot (Sea-Bathing Maids) as well as Sibelius’ Höstkväll (Autumn Evening) and På verandan vid havet (On the Veranda by the Sea), in which we hear his musical language at its most advanced. The performers have also chosen a thrilling group of three songs from the output of the Austrian-American composer Korngold, and the evening ends with the enchanting aria Marietta’s Song from his opera Die tote Stadt.
