GEORGE BENJAMIN: Dream of the Song
RICHARD STRAUSS: Tod und Verklärung Op. 24

The focus composer of the FRSO Festival is British composer-conductor George Benjamin. He wrote his Concerto for Orchestra in memory of his friend Oliver Knussen. It is not, however, mournful, attempting to evoke a trace of the energy, humor and spirit he associated with his friend. The Three Nocturnes by Claude Debussy serve as an introduction to the dreamy nocturnal world of Benjamin’s Dream of the Song cycle. In Richard Strauss’s Death and Transfiguration, an artist takes a look back over his past life at the moment of death.
