Domenico Scarlatti – born in 1685, the same year as Bach and Handel – is best known for his 555 keyboard sonatas. His poignantly expressive Stabat mater for 10 voices, written in Rome in 1715, is a masterpiece of the Baroque choral repertoire. Domenico’s father, Alessandro, was a significant figure in opera in Naples, but also wrote sacred music, including this beautiful Salve Regina in D minor for four voices from 1703. The programme also includes three short Finnish pieces spanning several generations of composers. In Schwäbisch Gmünd, the Helsinki Chamber Choir renews its collaboration with NeoQuartet from Poland in Komm, a cantata by the young Hungarian composer Balázs Kecskés D., while in Helsinki, organist Petteri Pitko completes the programme with a selection of Domenico Scarlatti’s highly inventive keyboard sonatas.
