Gustav Holst is said to have been irritated by the immoderate popularity of his Planets. The suite is nevertheless far more than just musical horoscope froth. Rather, it affords an interesting glimpse into the educated European worldview of the early 20th century – a time when rationalism was being undermined by a zest for theosophy and astrology.
